Diagram-style view of World Cup 2026 format from 12 groups to Round of 32 knockout bracket

World Cup 2026 is the first 48-team FIFA World Cup. In past cups, eight groups of four sent 16 teams to the knockouts. Here, you get 12 groups and 32 teams in the Round of 32. First, every nation plays three group games. Next, the top two in each group advance. Also, the eight best third-placed teams fill the rest of the knockout field. Because third place can still go through, reading the group tables and bracket matters from day one.

Group stage: 12 groups of four

Each of the 48 qualified nations plays three group matches. Groups are labelled A through L. The top two in every group qualify automatically — that is 24 teams. FIFA then ranks all 12 third-placed teams on points, goal difference, goals scored, and other tiebreakers. The best eight join the 24 automatic qualifiers.

So a team can finish third on four points and still advance. Or it can finish third on three points and miss out. During the last round of group games, many "best third" races run at once. For live numbers, use group standings, not this article. For tie rules, see our tiebreaker guide.

Each group fixture is listed on the fixtures page. After kickoff, follow goals on live scores or open the game on the match index.

Why FIFA expanded to 48 teams

The expansion gives more confederations guaranteed slots. It also adds more matches for fans and broadcasters. The trade-off is a longer calendar and more host cities. For supporters, that means more group-stage football and a Round of 32 that feels as big as an old Round of 16.

For example, fans in Africa, Asia, and Concacaf may see more nations at the finals. Then the knockout path still ends with one champion. The full schedule guide shows how long each phase runs. Host cities are listed in our where is World Cup 2026 guide.

Knockout path after the group stage

From the Round of 32 onward, the tournament is single elimination. Extra time and penalties apply when needed. The bracket is mapped in advance by FIFA — winners of Group A face a specific third-placed slot, and so on. Our knockout bracket page fills in team names as results are confirmed.

Next comes the Round of 16, then quarter-finals, semi-finals, a third-place play-off, and the final on 19 July 2026. For a round-by-round walkthrough, read the knockout bracket explainer. During games, live scores track who is through.

Goal scorers update on the top scorers table throughout the knockouts. Because one loss sends you home, each tie gets its own match page with lineups and stats.

What to watch on the standings page

Use live group standings for points and tiebreakers. This article explains the rules; the standings page shows the math. We highlight best-third scenarios during the final group round once teams have played two matches.

First, check your team's place and goal difference. Next, look at other groups where third place might finish on the same points. Then compare the "best third" table FIFA uses. For narrative context on each group, try our groups preview.

When the Round of 32 is set, switch to the knockout hub. The fixtures page lists every knockout kickoff in your timezone.

How the format affects fans

More groups mean more early upsets and more travel for supporters. A fan might follow a team that needs a draw on matchday three while also watching goal difference across other groups. That is new compared to a 32-team cup.

For example, a European side could finish third with four points and still reach the Round of 32. Another might win six points and lose a tiebreaker. So the last group day is busy — use live scores and the homepage schedule together.

After the group stage, the format feels familiar: win or go home. Start on the news hub if you want guides on watching on TV or time zones.

Because the Round of 32 is new for many fans, bookmark the knockout bracket explainer before the group stage ends. That way you know how winners from Group A meet third-placed teams from other groups.
